WHILE IT IS NOT MANDATORY FOR THIS CLASS, STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO OBTAIN A COPY OF AMSCO AP U.S. GOVERNMENT & POLITICS EDITION 3 OR LATER.
AP U.S. Government & Politics is a rigorous, college-level course that delivers the fundamentals necessary for being an active, civic participant. Students are expected to be able to read at or above grade-level and strong reading comprehension is a must. Students who take this course are highly engaged critical-thinkers who are interested in the political system and culture of the United States. They are organized, driven, and interested in civic engagement.
Over the course of the year, we will examine the following topics:
- Foundations of American democracy
- Interactions among branches of government
- Civil liberties & civil rights
- American political ideologies and beliefs
- Political participation
While writing is a key component of this class, analysis is our most significant skill. Students will learn and be able to:
- connect political concepts to real-life situations
- explain impact and implications of certain Supreme Court decisions
- analyze data to find patterns & trends, and draw conclusions
- read and analyze texts and visual sources
There will be NO summer 2024 assignments for AP U.S. Government & Politics. This is a college-leve course that will begin on the first day of school. :)
PARENTS/GUARDIANS: Your students's AP U.S. Government & Politics syllabus is available here, as well as on the homepage of their Canvas class! Canvas will show you what your student has turned in, as well as what work they are missing. Powerschool is where you will find an accurate, up-to-date grade for your student. Parents/Guardians are able to have access to both Canvas and Powerschool. (If you do not have a Parent Account, please come into the front office with your student's name and ID number and you wlll be given the necessary information to create your account.)
STUDENTS: I will be communicating using Canvas Announcements this year. Please be sure to enable your Canvas settings to allow for message alerts.
