Miss Kathleen Szczepaniak
Hello
This is Kathleen Szczepaniak, teacher at Deer Valley High School and Deer Valley Academy. I have been a teacher since 1994 teaching American Government, Economics, World History, U.S. History, Language Arts, Service Learning, Leadership,Student Government, Psychology, Sociology, Science, General Math, Today's Teen, Street Law, Law in Society, and MANY other electives. I L-O-V-E Teaching! I L-O-V-E Learning!
For the 2024-2025 school year I am teaching World History and Honors World History/Rio Salado World History 110 & 111.
I am a teacher-scholar with the Teaching American History Grant, National Endowment for the Humanities,Foundation for Teaching Economics, Thomas R. Brown Foundation, U.S. Marine Corps, and the Gilder-Lehrman Institute. I continue my education and have recently become a Nearpod and Apple Certified Teacher. I find that the more I, myself, learn the better my teaching is and the more my students will learn and remember. So, I travel and learn as much as I can.
I attended college at Glendale Community College, Arizona State University, Colorado State University at Colorado Springs, NOVA Southeastern University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Arizona, Chapman University, New York University, and several others. As an opportunity arises for me to learn and study I take the chance. That is why I have attended so many colleges. I am currently working on my Master's degree in Technology Integration.
I have taken on MANY roles in addition to my duties as a teacher. I have been Student Council adviser, Students Against Destructive Decisions adviser, Head Dive Coach, Assistant Swim Coach, Language Arts Level Chairperson, Social Studies Level Chairperson, Prevention Coordinator, Senior Institute Adviser, e-school Online Learning Course Developer, Curriculum Development Coordinator, and member of MANY committees. I am currently the Deer Valley HS Community Service Coordinator.
I have been awarded numerous times and recognized for the work I have done with and for the students. Some of the awards I have won include the Cox Communication Excellence in Education Award, National Endowment for the Humanities Teacher Scholar, Gilder-Lehrman Summer Intern, Street Law Intern, Deer Valley USD Teacher of the Year, Arizona Association of Student Councils "Most Spirited and Active Adviser," and MANY other awards.
I am here to assist the students in learning, instilling a love of learning, and gaining a knowledge of the world they live in. I strive to teach by example. The more I learn and can relate to the lives of the students the more they will learn and want to continue to learn. Wouldn't it be a better world if everyone was a life-long learner?
